Manager Tips: Set Your Team up for Success
To successfully execute a project or initiative, you and your team likely start by defining project goals and build a plan to achieve them. Goal setting is just as important when it comes to well-being. When you encourage employees to set well-being goals, you are setting them up for greater success – both personally and professionally. In fact, goal setting is linked to improved job safety, lower absenteeism, and higher engagement and job performance.
Here are five ways you can help your team set well-being goals this year:
- Put your team goals down on paper.
Work with your team to come up with 1-3 collective well-being goals. Try to think through all pillars of well-being as you map out your goals. Then, make sure to document and post the team goals somewhere everyone can access, like Teams. Commit to sharing well-being moments or taking well-being breaks during staff meetings, team building activities that support well-being (e.g. volunteering or step challenges) or attending WELLbinars as a team. - Encourage individuals to set their own goals.
Give individuals a nudge to set their personal well-being goals for the year and to use the tools available at WellBeingAtAECOM.com for support. If you set and share your own goals, they will likely be inspired to do the same. - Check in regularly.
Set regular check-ins with your individual team members to provide feedback on professional and personal goals (if shared). Holding your team members accountable, encouraging them to stay motivated and providing consistent feedback will increase the likelihood that they will hit their targets and achieve success. - Track and share progress.
Take time during meetings to share updates on the progress your team is making towards your collective well-being goals. Use your original goal setting document and other visuals (e.g. charts and graphics) to show how far you’ve come since Day 1, while also mapping out the specific next steps that will bring you closer to the goals you’ve set. - Celebrate success.
Recognizing milestones on the road to success is critical to sustain momentum and motivation. Take time for a well-being moment in meetings, organize recognition lunches, send out appreciation emails or create a wall of fame at the office (or virtually!) to acknowledge success, both small and big.
